Popular Weight Loss Programs

Although fast weight loss programs seem to be a myth, there are certain programs that if followed correctly, can prove to be very helpful in losing weight. The battle against obesity is a long and daunting one and although there are numerous options available many have grown tired of trying countless methods that have no lasting effect, weight loss is usually defined as a loss of body mass or body fat through the use of different methods such as diets, exercises and weight loss programs.

There are many popular programs available that have helped countless individuals shed their desired weight, although this is good, the aim is not just to lose weight but to change unhealthy eating habits so that the weight stays off for good.

The Atkins Diet
This is a very successful yet controversial program which was created by Robert Atkins; it is low in carbohydrates and high in fat and protein, this changes the body's metabolism from burning glucose to burning stored body fat, although there has been a lot of success with this diet there has also been concerns from physicians who claim that there are many risks associated with it.

The zone diet
After 15 years of research this method was designed by a biochemist known as Dr. Barry sears and incorporates an eating plan that maximizes fat loss while increasing energy. This diet means following recipes that entail a low carbohydrate diet plan, the trick is to not allow proteins to be more dominant than the carbohydrates. There are added benefits along with weigh loss that are linked with the zone diet such as improved energy, mental clarity and enhanced health.

Weight watchers
This program has been around for 40 years and was created by Jean Nidetch, it offers various dieting products and services to help achieve and maintain weight loss, this diet encourages members to increase protein intake which will help you to sleep better and be more energetic. The reason this method has been so successful is that it does not encourage a specific standard of beauty instead Weight watchers encourages its members to select an ideal goal that is healthy according to their body mass index. The program also has meetings where members can get support and counseling.

Does Your Life (And Weight Loss Goals) Make You Want to Cry "Uncle!"

So, this is it? This is the best life has to offer me? This is what I'm supposed to cherish? This? I mean, shouldn't there be more? Wasn't it supposed to resemble one of those fairytales? Wasn't I supposed to have been born beautiful, to parents who adored me, as well as one another? What about growing up with plenty of guidance and emotional support and sitting down at 6:00 to healthy family dinners? What happened to the life that was supposed to be grand! What about the handsome prince and living happily ever after? Where did it all go wrong?

No wonder we are all stressed, depressed, out of shape, and overweight! Our lives are often hard, and to be honest, a lot of the time life sort of stinks, doesn't it? When will we see an end to overly demanding work, and endlessly long days? When will we be free from the emotionally draining worries over kids and calories, husbands and health, poisons and plastics, happiness and hormones? We turn on the T.V. and it's scary, really scary. Terrorists are blowing things up in our own cities, countries are waging wars around the world and stocks keep crashing. Sell! Don't sell! Hang tough, and lose it all!

We can't breath the air in some places, and we hardly notice people wearing facemasks to filter out deadly contaminants. We bump fists so we don't get someone else's cooties. We've become such germaphobes that Purell stock is the investment of choice. Our water is contaminated, and the bottles that hold the safe stuff are an environmental disaster, and by the way, the stuff inside? Well, sorry, but that's not safe either. And then there is the fear about our very existence. When you get right down to it, there isn't a damn thing we can eat that won't kill us! And if it won't kill us, it will sure as hell kill the environment. We're suffocating the universe, and it'll be our own damn fault when the planet and all of us are blown to smithereens in the end! And if that weren't bad enough, they're telling us exactly when that end will come, and we had better get ready because we're all going to hell, as well....Unless we're already there. And if all this isn't bad enough, I'm still FAT!

It's all just too much, and I'm just not happy any more. I don't even actually remember a time when I was happy. Work and sleep and work and sleep - but don't sleep too much because there's too much to do. Plan this and attend to that; check the schedule; make the appointment for him and cancel one for her. Finish the expense report and paint the garage. The bills are overdue, the dog is sick and there's nothing in the house to eat. Why do I always feel so lousy? Well why wouldn't you, silly, you haven't had a healthy thing to eat or drink in near about the last decade. Desperate to numb yourself to the stress, you turn on the television, the radio, or the computer only to be harangued by advertisers telling you that you're not good enough. You need to do more, be more, buy more; to build it bigger, make it better, or at least super-size it! Unfortunately, you've listened and now you're bigger, but you certainly aren't better. When will this madness stop? Frankly, I don't see that happening.

How can we feel happy when we're bombarded daily with new studies indicating the health threat posed by yet another food or object? To be honest, even when I'm feeling healthy, I'm scared. I know there will be some new "finding" telling me that I'm "at risk" if I don't spend a month's pay on some new blood test, body scan or rectal probe that will undoubtedly uncover something quite horrid. And, oh, the sleepless nights dreading the probe! So we live in a perpetual state of wonderment: Alice had nothing on us as we try to make sense of a crazy world, driven by fear. If we're not terrified by predictions of end times, we're paranoid about our own mortality. Just listen to the dire statistics on the evening news: younger and younger men and women collapsing from coronaries at work; health-conscious athletes going to sleep at night, never to wake again, victims of unsuspected silent killers! So, we submit to more probes: squeeze those breasts-harder! Prod that belly and cough, darn it! They're looking for something, and they won't stop until they find it! Maybe I'm next, we think, as we search for the tumor we're now convinced is lurking deep within, just waiting to jump out and scream, "Gotcha sucka!" When does this roller coaster stop? Where do you get off? When, for goodness sakes, will you stop Googling your symptoms, looking for a do-it-yourself diagnosis? UNCLE!!

I, for one, am done. I am done with fear and done with my weaknesses and done with my excuses for not having what I want. I am tired of waiting for the other shoe to drop; tired of being a statistic; tired of being fed lies about what I should eat, drink, and think; tired of the fearful masses predicting the hour and minute I will draw my last breath on this Earth. I mean, seriously! UNCLE!

I am choosing life, right now, right here. How about you? Care to join me and make the commitment to take your life into your own hands? Care to make some changes in the way you choose your words, your food, your friends, your day, your life? If you want to accept my challenge, do this for me now: go to a mirror. That's correct, right now! Look at yourself in the mirror. It doesn't have to be a full-length mirror, any size will do. What do you see? I will tell you what I see. At first, I see a tired face. I see lines and droopy skin and gray roots. I see my mother's sad face in mine. Then, when I look at my eyes, I see more sadness and exhaustion. I also see hints of the young girl I used to be. Why does the vision of my own face make me feel sadness? What does your face say to you, and how does it make you feel? Next, if you are really bold, go to a full-length mirror. Don't be scared; just go with it. What do you see? Do you recognize the woman in that mirror? Is she the woman you have always dreamed you would be? How do you feel looking at yourself? Stay there, please; don't walk away yet. This shouldn't be so hard. Remember how much you loved to look at yourself in the mirror when you were a little girl and how you loved to play dress up and make believe? What do you believe today?

Okay this next step is only for the brave of heart! Take off your clothes. Put on a bathing suit, if you must, or just stand there in your underwear, or better yet, stand there completely naked. I dare you. Uncomfortable? Why? You are the only one in the room, I hope! Go ahead and look at yourself. Even take it one step further: take off any makeup you might be wearing. No? Have I just heard an overwhelming crying out of NOOO? Come on; it's only you. Don't you like what you see? What don't you like about yourself? Since you are there anyway, why don't you just do one turn around; do it slowly.

If you don't like what you're looking at, and you're uncomfortable being alone with yourself, and it makes you sad, or angry, or anxious, then why won't you do something about it? Why won't you stop all the madness around you and inside of you? Aren't you tired of not being in control of even the simplest decisions that, honestly, only you can control: the decisions about what to put in your mouth? It's up to you to stop all the craziness. It's up to you to put down whatever it is you most crave. No matter what you say to yourself, the honest truth, the naked truth, if you will, is that what you really crave beyond any potato chip, or double chocolate sundae, is to love being the woman you see staring back at you in that mirror. Isn't that true? So, what are you waiting for? Just stop all the craziness; take control of your life, of your happiness, of your food, and of your health. Make yourself want to look in that mirror and want to be that woman. I've put in a lot of years up to this point, and I am tired of being tired. I am tired of being scared. I am tired of not wanting to be the woman looking back at me. How about you?

UNCLE.

Benefits Of Exercise Videos For Weight Loss

I asked my sister to come to my gym with a guest pass. She replied something to the effect of "I am in no shape to go to the gym". What? I thought you go to the gym to get in shape not get in shape to go to they gym! Upon further questioning and digging I uncovered the obvious - my sister is just not comfortable in the gym.

I have found that others feel the same. I certainly do not agree with this type of thinking but I do recognize that it exists and some people will simply not go to a gym or exercise class simply because they are not comfortable in that atmosphere.

Exercise videos are perfect for this type of person!

On the flip side, my wife loves to go to the gym but she is also a very busy person. Sometimes she just does not feel like packing all of her clothing in her gym bag and hauling it all day. Sometimes she just wants to exercise at home.

Exercise videos are perfect for this type of person!

So what are the benefits of exercise videos and how can they help you lose weight?

· Exercise videos are usually led by world class instructors. These instructors are usually the top in their field. They have pioneered a system which more than likely has proven results.

· Exercise videos can keep you from getting bored in your fitness and weight loss routine. You can get an exercise video for aerobics, kick boxing, power yoga, step aerobics, basic training, and the list goes on. You can get them in a studio format, on a beach, by a pool, with beautiful scenery - No limits!

· You can perform your exercise routine on your schedule. You are not dependent on the gym hours or aerobics class hours. You may have a hard time fitting a 5:30 class into your schedule but you can always find time to play a recorded video at your convenience.

· Exercise videos allow you to work at your own pace. If you miss a step or are just not conditioned, you can rewind or skip a certain part of the routine.

· Most exercise videos are full of positive reinforcement and affirmations. It is good to hear success stories and "you can do it"!

· You can more accurately measure your results. If you are doing the same video for an extended period of time you will know if you have improved either in cardiovascular conditioning, flexibility, or strength. If you are doing a different routine in a regimented class sometimes it is hard to notice your improvements.

· Exercise videos are inexpensive. You can collect them and enjoy varied workouts and instructors for very low costs.

The key to losing weight is burning more calories than you consume. Exercise videos take care of the calorie burning part of this duo. The body was made to move! When you exercise and eat healthy the benefits are priceless! You feel great, are sick less often, have greater range of movement, less pain, and a better mental outlook.

· Pick an exercise video for your level of fitness.

· Pick a video that interests you and seems fun to you

· Share videos with friends for a varied experience.

· Set aside time to workout to your video. Make it a ritual.

· If you start getting bored with a routine - Find another one! But don't quit!

· Remember that moving the body is fun!

· Follow the instructions and warnings that come with the video

· Check with your doctor before beginning any exercise or weight loss program.

Weight Loss For Teens - 5 Tips to Help Teens to Lose Weight

Weight loss for anyone can be challenging, especially during the teen years, because of all the hormonal changes. However, these years are an ideal time to set up lifelong healthy-eating habits. You can help your teen to lose weight.

Here's how.

1. Downplay weight loss for teens in favor of encouraging healthy living. Instead of nagging your teen to exercise more or to avoid junk food, encourage healthy interests. Fortunately, there are plenty of active video games and other activities that are in vogue among teens right now.

They are also very interested in vegetarianism and other alternative eating styles these days. It should be very easy to get your teen interested in them. Who knows, these trends may soon filter through the rest of your family.

2. Tell your teen the dangers of fad diets and weight loss pills.

Teens live for the current moment and so weight loss for teens is a constant battle against the quick fix. Explain to your teen that many weight loss pills and potions can be potentially harmful, especially if they are not taken according to directions.

Explain that these products can also be very expensive and often the weight comes right back when people stop taking them. Also explain the very real health dangers of fad diets.

3. Make weight loss for teens a family affair. Get the junk food out of the house and only keep healthy snacks on hand. Set aside time for a family bike ride or walk.

Get the entire household to work together to clean the house or work in the yard. These group activities foster teamwork and family pride. They are also great for one-on-one talks. You may find your teen opening up to you in ways he or she never has before.

4. Avoid celebrity weight-loss stories.  Teens are very much a product of the culture in which we live. Unfortunately, ultra-thin celebrities take center stage in that culture.

Weight-loss for teens often means they are trying to match that look when their bodies are just not made the same way. Explain that while celebrities often must be thinner than the general public (because photography seemingly adds pounds), they are not necessarily healthier or happier.

5. Bring out your teen's inner beauty.

Weight for teens is often a matter of self-esteem and self-image. Encourage him or her to accentuate the best features and de-emphasize other areas. Take her for a subtle make-over at a local day spa. Take him to a men-only hair studio or clothing store and let the personnel there give him some tips. Make a day of it and have some fun. Your teen will be able to see him or herself in a whole new light, and you will too.

Weight-loss for teens is an important issue, probably the one they focus on the most. By emphasizing their positive traits and encouraging healthy habits, you can help your teen be attractive and happy, both now and in adulthood.

Discover The Difference Between Fat Loss And Weight Loss

People often use the terms weight loss and fat loss interchangeably. Weight and fat are two different things. Weight refers to the sum total of what the human body is made of. Fat is only one part of the whole. To make your fitness programs more specific and effective, you need to know the difference between the two. Specific goals are necessary to come up with the right formula on how to achieve it. To hit your target, fitness plans should focus on what you're trying to aim for. For most people, that is fat loss.

Beauty is a matter of preference. Most people however would prefer the chiseled, lean look of muscles over spongy fat. Even if one has a healthy set of muscles within, fat can cover it and make you look soft. You can be within your ideal weight range and still look fat. That's what makes weight loss different from fat loss. You can lose weight and still have a thick layer of fat in your body. If you lose fat, the beauty of your muscles become evident to the casual observer. A lean muscled body not only looks good. It also makes you feel good.

Developing muscles help you fight fat. Pound for pound, muscles are heavier than fat. Muscles are tightly weaved tissue that carry its weight. Fat just lie there and depend on the muscles to carry them. This is one of the reasons why fat people get tired easily. They have so much fat that their muscles and bones work harder to carry it. Muscles burn calories even when you're at rest. The more muscle fibers you have, the more efficient your body burns calories. The weighing scale is not an accurate measurement of fitness. Fitness requires men to have 10 to 14% of body fat percentage. Women, because they are genetically predisposed to it, should strive for 16 to 20% body fat percentage.

A weighing scale cannot tell the difference between muscles, water and fat. It simply tells you how heavy you are. Boxers and wrestlers can achieve weight loss easily by dehydrating themselves days prior to the weigh in. Then again, we are not boxers or wrestlers or even professional mixed martial arts fighters, we just can't dehydrate ourselves and risk being rushed to the nearest hospital. Fitness is not measured by the weighing scale. Evaluation tools for body fat percentage are more precise in determining if you are truly fit or not.

The difference between fat and weight loss is visible to the naked eye. Working towards fat loss can be harder but infinitely more rewarding. Admit it, hard muscles are really more preferable than spongy fat.

Dinner Parties And Weight Loss

Now that Christmas is over and you have fully recovered from your New Years Eve, the time has come to stand upon your scales and assess the damage. My worst trait is feeling unhappy with my body shape, I know that if I need to lose a few inches round my waist I will still lick that last bit of chocolate sauce from the bottom of my pudding bowl (that came perfectly wrapped with my matching dinner sets). With a momentary satisfaction of how delicious, that dessert was, I then find myself bogged down with guilt.

Christmas is a time to indulge and relax. Forget about healthy eating during this period, regardless of whether you are at work, in town shopping or at home with family, someone is bound to open a new box of chocolates. For my Christmas present this year, I was pleasantly surprised to have received more dinner sets, beautifully designed with two extra dessert bowls large enough to fit a pint and half of ice cream - just what I needed for the coming New Year.

Therefore, for my New Year's resolution I had decided upon, is to stay strict with my diet, eat wholesome organic foods (steering clear from packaged microwave foods) and keep my new dinner sets for a more special occasion. However, each time I looked at my new dining set it did entice me to organize and plan a nice evening indoors with friends eating proper home cooked meals. My father was a restaurateur in his younger days, so food and cooking is a passion in my family.

Therefore keeping a healthy waistline has been an issue since I can remember! Growing up in a family where dinner parties were common practically every week, with the main course being rice and curry, I became more accustomed to just eating however much I wanted to without a care or worry in the world. Then came the annoying period of my teenage years - when I started to develop hips, hormones and bad skin! Where one person appreciates the delicacies of fine food served on fine china, I had to become more conscious of how much I would spoon onto my plate.

I have, over the years, learnned that dieting and weight management need not be an obsession, before you know it, you will be finding yourself feeling guilty about every spoonful of food you put into your mouth. It is a well-known fact that long-term weight loss is far more beneficial and longer lasting than fast crash dieting. Fast weight loss does work for a short period of time, but what would be the point of enjoying your efforts for a short period when you can learn to maintain a healthy weight without sacrificing too much of your favorite foods.

The trick is to learn how to control how much you eat; fatty foods are not necessarily the enemy. In fact eating the right balance of protein, carbohydrate and fat is the answer to a smoother weight loss. Eating more protein food for lunch and dinner keep you sustained and less likely to crave. Eating complex carbohydrate such as rice, fruit and vegetables will ensure good slow-release energy and keep you filled for longer. Fats, in moderation can also provide good energy as well be beneficial for your skin, hair and nails; if you are training at the gym, it is essential you replenish the Omega nutrition in your body, by consuming more oily fish, milk, cheese and eggs.

Therefore, if you are someone who likes to whip out your favourite dining china set and holds many dinner parties keep in mind that you do not have to scare your friends by preparing something that will taste, quite frankly, terrible because of your dieting restrictions. Balance the portions out and put a sensible amount of your main nutritional needs - as long as you have a good protein, fat and carbohydrate ratio it is possible to lose weight and still enjoy parties with friends.
